    About Almora

    Location

    Almora is one of the five districts of Uttaranchal and a very popular hill station. At an elevation of 1,646 m above the sea level, Almora is based on a 5 km long horseshoe shaped ridge. It is at a distance of 90 km from Kathgodam, 103 km from Nainital and 378 km from Delhi.

    Sight Seeing

    Almora is popular among tourists as a summer getaway for the much require break from the heat waves of the plains of north India. It is a small town built on the Kashaya Hill according to the Skanda Purana. Four hill ranges, namely, Banari Devi, Kasar Devi, Shyahi Devi and Katarmal, surround the town of Almora. Unlike most of the hill stations, Almora was not discovered by the British but was already an established town with a long history. Besides the scenic beauty to offer, Almora is famous for several temples some which date back to as early as 8th century AD. Kasar Devi Temple is 6 km from the town. The temple is on the Kalmatiya Hill and is famous because Swami Vivekananda meditated at this place. Nanda Devi Temple or the Udyotchandeshwar Temple is located in the busy market of the town. The Government Museum near the bus Station displays some very unique collection of the Katyuri and Chand period. Bright End Corner, 2 km from the town, is the most frequented corner of the city. It offers a majestic view of the Himalayas. Jageshwar is renowned as being one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva. It is 35 km from Almora and has temples ranging from 7th century AD to 12th century AD. Katarmal, another small village famous for the 800-year-old Sun Temple is 17 km from the main town.
